Artful landscapes: favorites week ending 06.25.17
Ooops realized that nice picture of Alex speaking about Kerry James Marshall's MASTRY exhibition at MOCA from the previous post was this week, not last. Here's a different shot of a gorgeous painting of a beauty salon with a Cinderella memento mori. I miss this show!
Had some nice times looking at art this week. Also a refreshing cocktail in the wonderful garden at Hauser & Wirth. Gave a copy of FULL BLEDE Issue One: The Overshare to these two.
Stopped at Tin Flats, an artists workspace in Frog Town for the opening of Detour West. The space is quite posh for an active artist studio warehouse. That sweet a/c. It's just down the road from my old job at Mark Grotjahn Studios—the neighborhood is changing. What I didn't know then is that the show was organized by Skibum MacArthur, which is run by Kibum Kim, an instructor and senior administrator for the graduate program I am about to enter.
Saw a few shows in Culver City including Edward Cella (the nicest man in the LA art scene?), Luis De Jesus Los Angeles, Klowden Mann, and Blum + Poe which has a delightful Jim Shaw exhibition. I regret I couldn't take a better image of the sweet shopping cart illustration. I thoroughly enjoy Shaw's work, but was especially taken with the simple drawings.
Final stop was BBQ-LA for Set the Table, curated by Thomas LInder. Sweet stuff. (The post's thumbnail is from the show.)
