From a small piece, a big idea for Day 26 #100DaysStudioObj
This 6" x 6" cradle box collage is what started my latest obsession with little strips of paper hiding and revealing another element, what I've been calling "peek-a-boo". I especially love the tone of the vintage magazine I used for the piece—the beiges and off whites mixed with red and black.
I don't have that much material with this tonality (shockingly—especially because I feel like I have so much material—stacks and stacks of old magazines), which is why I didn't try to duplicate it for the large piece I finished last week. The starkness of the black, white, and a bit of red I used in the big piece feels a bit harsh in comparison to the warm tones of this smaller one. Which is fine. Maybe it is even a nice metaphor for the big piece itself—career roles of women, art world misogyny, and viewing these big topics in black and white.
I have the last 4 pieces I've created in this "peek-a-boo" style leaning on my display shelves in the studio. And I think of this as the beginning—the idea is still developing.
